Can Craze Competition Entry

This year our eco schools homeschool gtin-shark-t1roup is part of a shark research project: Every 2 weeks we have to collect shark egg casings along a specific stretch of coastline and classify and sort them according to their species and then give it to the researchers of the Shark Conservancy who are using the data to learn more about the breeding seasons and territories of the various sharks.
So shark conservation is an issue close to our hearts and it inspired one of the children to suggest that we build a tin shark as our entry into the Collect-a-Can CAN Craze Competition for schools.

Various members of the group collected cans from local restaurants, which we had to wash, sort, spike with holes, thread onto wires and tie together with cable ties. What we thought would take about two mornings in the June/July holidays, extended into a project that took every Saturday morning of the third term. We learned good lessons in perseverence and team work!

The timing for this competition, which closed at the end of September, was perfect as, after weeks of working on it every week-end, our tin shark was completed just before the annual Whale Festival, in time to be used by the Shark Conservancy at the New Harbour in Hermanus to draw attention to their work and their holiday activities for the public during the annual Hermanus Whale Festival!
So our tin can is being put to good use until such time as it will be recycled!
